SBDC

The College hosted the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at FAU and Chile SBDC – SERCOTEC on November 9th, 2021. The main goal of the visit was to shed light on the role of research and education in supporting small businesses. Dr. Sara Alshareef, SBDC-FAU consultant in residence at the COB, organized the event.

Siri Tejesen, Professor and Associate Dean for Research and External Relations, welcomed SERCOTEC to the College, and Sofia Johan, Associate Professor of Finance, presented her research on SERCOTEC.

Roland Kidwell, Chair and Desantis Distinguished Professor of Management/Entrepreneurship and Director of the Adams Center for Entrepreneurship, with Kevin Cox, Senior Instructor and Assistant Director of the Adams Center for Entrepreneurship, highlighted student engagement and the value of experiential learning for students' learning at the COB. David Herst, Senior Instructor of Management Programs–Leadership and Human Resources, shared his insight on the importance of negotiation in international business.

SBDC-FAU, in conjunction with Chile SBDC – SERCOTEC, is collaborating with the COB in offering an experiential learning program for its students. This is part of the SBDC Economic Development and Foreign Direct Investment. SBDC-FAU is consulting with 16 firms in Chile on how to incorporate businesses in Florida whereby the initiative is to engage students to be part of the consulting project (between 7 and 16 Chilean companies) during the spring semester of 2022. This opportunity would utilize the time and talent of students and offer hands-on experiences through interacting with real-world business cases.

Faculty in the community

Stephanie Castro, Associate Professor, Department of Management Programs, helps each year with local Thanksiving food drives. This year, she was involved with the local charity, Bella Star Foundation, a nonprofit that helps people in our community; 100% of their donations go to those in need. They delivered 46 donated Thanksgiving meals to a school in Pompano Beach for distribution to needy families for the holiday.
