Johan Elected to Entrepreneurship Panel for Professional Trade Association

Sofia Johan, Ph.D., an associate professor of finance, will assume a leadership role this summer in an 85-year-old professional association of management academics worldwide.

Johan was elected to be a representative at large on the Entrepreneurship Division’s executive committee at the Academy of Management. The Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.-based organization’s network includes 20,000 members in more than 120 countries.

The Entrepreneurship Division, one of 26 special interest areas, includes researchers, teachers, Ph.D. students, consultants, entrepreneurs and others focused on developing entrepreneurial scholars. 

As a representatives at large, Johan expects to lead committees or committee clusters, serve as a committee member and fulfill formal ambassadorial duties on behalf of the division. Her three-year term begins Aug. 15.

Johan joined FAU in fall 2018. She has been an Academy of Management member since 2006, attending its renowned national conferences where academics present their latest entrepreneurial research.

She also has presented at the annual conferences her own research on entrepreneurial finance, consisting of venture capital and private equity, crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending.

Johan started volunteering for mentoring positions in 2019 and has mentored Ph.D. students from New Zealand, India and South Africa.

At least one person nominated Johan for the representative at large position. She was one of four people elected from a pool of 65 candidates.

“In academics, no person is an island,” Johan said. “As I benefited a great deal from being a member, I realized what a privilege it is to be in this position to give back to my community and to help emerging scholars with their research and career goals.”
